This collection of 306 anecdotes, moral disquisitions,prescriptiveethicsand practical advice is ascribed to Han Ying 韓嬰 (ca. 200 – 130B.C.). The Hanshiwaizhuan(Outer Tradition of Han Ying’s Illustrations of the Book ofSongs) draws on avariety ofphilosophical sources reaching from Xunzi 荀子 to the LüshiCunqiu 呂氏春秋,affirming everyassumption it makes by using a quotation from the Book ofSongs (Shijing詩經). Although itis moralizing in most parts, some entertaininganecdotes lack anyapparent ethicalpoint.
